A town with about 1,600 inhabitants, the commune stretches over some 2,500 hectares and is crossed by the Bancel river. Albon’s history is integral with it’s tower. Strategically placed high on its hill, it has watched for over ten centuries over La Valloire plain where it opens out into the Rhône valley. The splendid view looks over the patchwork green of the orchards and the gold of the grain fields that touch the horizon at Pilat national park. The square tower was first constructed in wood before being fortified to a thickness of 1m60cm by river stones, sandstone and shale. Now classed as a historical monument, it stands as a testament to the powerful Counts of Albon who created the Dauphiné independant state in the 11th century. St. Philibert church was finished in the 12th century, making this unusual, lovely old village really worth a visit. It has also been renovated and now happily cultivates botanical plants on the theme of magic and symbolism.
