Beausemblant
is to the north of La Valloire. The town is perched up high and overlooking the
Rhône Valley, Drôme des Collines and Vercours, with splendid panoramic views
over beautiful countryside. The little town has just over a thousand
inhabitants and has the church at it’s heart. This 19th century
building still conserves a Romanesque door and capitals, witness to an earlier
era.
Beausemblant also has a château, a 16th century building that was occupied by an upwardly mobile local tailor called Barthélémy de Laffemas. He made the acquaintance of Henry of Navarre, the future Henry IV of France. When Henry was crowned, Barthélémy became controller in chief of manufacturing and president of the chamber of commerce. His influence was considerable and he was at the origin of many reforms.
