Manthes

Manthes is a lovely old-fashioned village with its ancient stones and idyllic rural life.
The little renovated aqueduct with it’s ‘trout bridge’ serves to underline just how many of La Valloire rivers are replete with fish such as the river trout, pike, whitebait and carp.
A small village of 582 inhabitants, it has at its centre a communal wash area created in 1885 from the source of the Veuze river and flowing naturally into a lake. The banks are ideal for relaxing and enjoying time with the family.
Manthes still has its 11thcentury priory built high above the village. Part of the powerful Benedictine Cluny Abbey federation, it has a spiral stairway leading to the prayer room.
The adjoining church is typical of local architecture and was built with river stone, sandstone and shale, resulting in a simple, æsthetic beauty.
