Peyraud

Peyraud is a small community of 596 hectares in Green Ardèche and is between the Rhône and the Vivarais mountains.
The village developed around St. Ruf’s Canons Priory, which was destroyed in 1568. The church with its 12th century chancel, was built on the site of the ancient monastery’s chapel. The château, dating from the reign of Louis XIII in the 16th century, is in private ownership. In the hamlet of Verlieux, situated on the hill, the chapel of Notre Dame de la Pitié contains a statue of St. Martin, the village’s patron saint. There is a wonderful view from here over the Rhône valley.
The lovely waterfall over the Crémieux brook, a tributary of the Rhône, and its pretty Romanesque bridge will please the heart of any romantically inclined traveller.
The St. Martin fountain is in the south of the village in the Bonnefond district. Legend has it that St. Martin came to the hamlet and the rock has preserved the imprint of his horse’s shoe. It is reputed to have properties capable of healing those with skin problems! For a tiny village with 460 inhabitants, it has a great deal on offer!
